PE pipe performance parameter index

PE pipe is a commonly used pipe material in construction engineering. It is mainly used for water supply and drainage. Here we have a look at the performance parameters of PE pipe:

▲First, what is PE100 polyethylene pipe?

The development of polyethylene pipe materials is recognized as being divided into three generations, that is, three stages of development:

The first generation, low-density polyethylene and “type I” high-density polyethylene, its performance is poor, equivalent to the current PE63 grade polyethylene pipe material.

The second generation, medium-density polyethylene pipe materials with high long-term hydrostatic strength and resistance to cracking appeared in the 1960s, now known as PE80 grade polyethylene pipe materials.

The third generation, which emerged in the 1980s, is known as the third generation polyethylene pipe special material PE100. PE100 means that under the condition of 20 °C, polyethylene pipe can still maintain the minimum required strength MRS of 10MPa after 50 years, and it has excellent resistance to rapid crack growth. Domestically, there are no current generation materials.

▲Second, the mechanical properties of PE100 resin (Solvay ELTEX TVB120 series)

  • Long-term strength

Durable strength is determined by testing the line pressure at different temperatures (20°C, 40°C, 60°C and 80°C). At 20°C, PE100 resin can maintain a minimum strength of 10 MPa after 50 years (PE80 is 8.0 MPa).

  • Good stress cracking resistance

PE100 polyethylene pipe special material has good stress crack resistance, delays the appearance of stress cracking (>10000 hours), and can even be delayed to more than 100 years under 20°C conditions.

  • Significant anti-crack rapid growth

The requirement to resist the rapid growth of cracks has limited the use of conventional polyethylene pipes: In gas, the pressure limit is 0.4 MPa and the water delivery is 1.0 MPa. Due to the remarkable rapid crack growth resistance shown by PE100, the pressure limit in the natural gas network was increased to 1.0 MPa (1.2 MPa in Russia and 1.6 MPa in the water transmission network). In short, the application of PE100 polyethylene in pipelines will ensure a safer, more economical and longer service life of the pipeline network.

▲Third, what are the main advantages of PE100 polyethylene pipe?

PE100 has all the excellent properties of polyethylene, and its apparent improvement in mechanical properties, which makes PE100 has many special advantages, and is applied to more fields.

  • stronger pressure resistance

Because PE100 resin has the minimum necessary strength of 10MPa, much higher pressure resistance than other polyethylene, gas and liquid can be increased by high pressure;

Polyethylene Pipeline Series Gas Water

PE80 SDR17/SDR17.6 0.2MPa 0.8MPa

SDR11 0.4MPa 1.25MPa

PE100 SDR!7/SDR!7.6 0.4MPa 1.0MPa

SDR11 1.0MPa 1.6MPa

Therefore, for a given diameter, the increase in pressure will significantly increase the delivery capacity of the tube; for natural gas pipelines, increasing the pressure and reducing the diameter can be selected at the same time, so that the total cost will be reduced. Because: 1 can save the pipe; 2 can dig a narrower ditch to install the pipe; 3 the pipe can be made smaller to facilitate the winding and reduce the connection (welding) joint; 4 the pipeline becomes smaller, other installation can be selected technology.

▲thinner tube wall

Under normal operating pressures, pipes made of PE100 materials can be greatly altered in their wall. For large-diameter water pipes, the use of book-end pipes can save material and enlarge the area of the cross-section of the pipe, which increases the conveying capacity of the pipe. If the conveying capacity is constant, the increase in the cross-section brings about a decrease in the flow rate, so that the pump can be transported by a smaller power pump, thereby saving costs.

Table 2: Use of PE100 to reduce the wall thickness of water and air lines Operating Pressure PE80 PE100 Material Savings Cross-section increase Increased conveying capacity

Water: 1.0Mpa SDR11 SDR17 33% 16% 35%

Water: ≤0.4Mpa SDR11SDR17.6 35% 17% 24%

▲Higher safety factor

If the pipe size is determined or the operating pressure is specified, PE100 can be used to ensure the highest safety factor in today’s various PE pipe lines.

▲ higher hardness

The PE100 material has an elastic modulus of 1250 MPa, which is higher than the standard high-density polyethylene resin of 950 MPa, which makes the PE100 tube have a higher ring stiffness.
